چکیده
Featured Keynote Speaker Prof. Brian Gibney CUNY Graduate Center While DNA is the blueprint for the cell, it is the proteins that do the bulk of the work. About 30% of proteins require metal ions for proper function and their dysfunction leads to human disease. The Gibney Lab takes a constructive approach toward understanding metalloprotein structurefunction relationships. Using inorganic chemistry and protein biophysics, his lab designs and synthesizes simplified metalloproteins (maquettes) to test the fundamental tenets of metalloprotein engineering.

Substance Use and the Number of Male Sexual Partners by African American and Puerto Rican Women
Background In the United States (US), there are 19 million new sexually transmitted disease (STD) infections each year. Untreated STDs can lead to serious long-term adverse health consequences, especially for young women. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that undiagnosed and untreated STDs cause at least 24,000 women in the US each year to become infertile. This clearly is a...
متن کاملThe Power of Fiction: How Literature Educated and Reformed American Society
This paper focuses on a number of American stories which helped educate people and bring about legal or social change. There are many stories which caused major or minor legal and political change, particularly, in the United States. Some of them are written by Herman Melville, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Upton Sinclair and Sidney Kingsley. After the publication of White Jacket by Melville the novel...
متن کاملA Theoretical Study of Solidarity in American Society: The Case of the “Ground Zero Mosque” Controversy
The paper uses the case study of the controversy regarding the construction of a mosque near the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in Manhattan, New York, to analyze the different theoretical approaches to the concept of solidarity. It is argued that the presence of affectional solidarity which is based on feelings of caring, friendship and love was very limited in the case under study. Instea...
متن کاملSediment microbiomes associated with critical habitat of the Juvenile American Horseshoe Crab; Limulus polyphemus
Plumb Beach, Brooklyn, New York in USA is an important horseshoe crab breeding and nursery ground that has experienced substantial anthropogenic influence, including pollution, erosion and subsequent restoration. Since little is known about the relationship between sediment microbial communities and juvenile horseshoe crab survival, next generation sequencing was used to characterize and compar...

متن کاملMicrobeads in Sediment, Dreissenid Mussels, and Anurans in the Littoral Zone of the Upper St. Lawrence River, New York.
Global plastic production has exceeded 300 million tons per year (Plastics Europe, 2015). In the marine and freshwater environments, larger plastics abrade and photo-degrade resulting in persistent environmental microplastics that are not effectively removed by existing wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The ecological effects of microplastics on the marine environment are poorly understood, ...
